Being a ‘fit person’ seems like a Herculean task, especially for those of us who are super-ambitious and see fitness influencers on socials achieving a level of perfection that we can only dream of. True, some of those people are blessed with movie star genes but mostly they got there through small wins, day in day out. When I say ‘small’, I mean it.
10 minutes a day is enough, through the beauty of compounding. This leads me to my first tip.
Start Small – 1 mile, 10 mins, 8k steps
Of course, going from zero to an ultra-marathon running seems impossible. Right now, in this very moment, it is! For most people, the thought of getting off our bottoms and running for hours straight is akin to madness. I ran my first 7 minutes when I was 18 and I felt like I wanted to die. I’ve never progressed into a runner (I don’t really enjoy it) but I managed my weekly 5k Park Runs by building that 7 mins into 10, into 15, into 20. I decided it wasn’t for me but having achieved a small running goal, I can proudly say I tried.
When you go to the gym, are you dreading the hour-long sacrifice you have to make to do a ‘full’ workout? Then don’t do an hour! Do 20 minutes every day. Envious of the hand-standing yogis plastered all over Instagram? Start with a 3 second hand balance every day while you watch Love Island. 30 second plank enough for you? Try increasing it by 5 seconds each week and see how quickly that 30 seconds increases to 3 minutes!
Be proud of your daily small wins and then in a month, see how much you have achieved!
